2024’s Best-Selling Games In The US So Far

Circana, a research group formerly known as NPD, has published its January 2024 US sales report, revealing which games sold the best during the month. Because it’s the first report of the month, this is not just the list of best-selling games for January 2024 but also the year so far.

It’s not a big surprise, but 2023’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III was January 2024’s best-selling game. Tekken 8 was No. 2 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was No. 3. The game released in February, but Circana’s reporting period for January 2024 ran through February 3.

Palworld was the biggest story in games in January 2024, but it doesn’t show up on the sales charts because developer Pocketpair does not share sales information with Circana. But in terms of “engagement,” the game did very well. It was the No. 1 most popular game on Steam in terms of monthly active users. It was No. 3 on Xbox, only trailing Fortnite and Call of Duty HQ (which covers Modern Warfare 3, Modern Warfare 2, and Warzone).

Pocketpair recently announced that Palworld had reached 25 million players, including 15 million in sales on Steam and 10 million players on Xbox (including direct sales and people who grabbed the game via Game Pass).

Another notable release in January was Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It ranked No. 13 for the month. It’s one of the best games of 2024 so far if you’re looking for something new to play.

For mobile games, Monopoly Go was the No. 1 game in terms of consumer spending in January 2024. The rest of the top five included Royal Match, Roblox, Candy Crush Saga, and Coin Master.

For hardware, spending fell 4% to $378 million. Xbox Series X|S consoles saw growth in January 2024, but PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch posted year-over-year declines. The PS5 was the No. 1 best-selling console in January 2024 for units and dollar sales. Switch was No. 2 for unit sales and Xbox Series X|S was No. 2 for dollar sales due to its relative higher price point.

Circana also reported that, after 39 months on the market, the PS5 is tracking 7% ahead of the PS4’s sales over a similar period of time in the US and 68% above PS3.

Spending on accessories rose 45% to $246 million, with the PS5 DualSense Edge becoming January 2024’s best-selling game accessory for dollar sales. The PlayStation Portal device is now counted in the accessories category, and it ranked No. 5 for spending in January 2025.

Total spending on video games in the US during January 2024 surged 15% to $5.1 billion. However, January 2024’s reporting period covered five weeks, compared to four weeks for January 2023. The window for January 2024 was December 30, 2023 – February 3, 2024. That means sales of Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League are counted for February. While the game underperformed, it no doubt contributed not-insignificant numbers for January.
