Best Games Like Ghost of Tsushima To Slash Your Way Through In 2025

Ghost of Tsushima is an absolute marvel of a game that takes you on a beautiful and dangerous journey across 13th-century Japan. While Ghost of Tsushima is a unique game in its own right, there are several other games like it that offer a similar experience in more ways than one. Whether it’s the Japanese setting, the combat, the world exploration, or the storytelling of Ghosts of Tsushima, you can play a handful of other games to recapture the same feelings you had when you first stepped into the shoes of Jin Sakai.

Today, we’ll be listing 15 games like Ghost of Tsushima to play after you’ve rolled credits and are looking for a similar experience. These games don’t necessarily have to be other top-notch RPGs, but many of them will offer equivalent character and world-building elements while also featuring the same kind of combat.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

  • Developer: From Software
  • Release Date: March 22, 2019
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

By default, Ghost of Tsushima isn’t an overly difficult game until you crank up the difficulty level. If you’re looking for a more challenging game, then you’ll want to check out Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Considered one of, if not the hardest souls-like game on the market, Sekiro is an absolutely punishing experience that utilizes some of the same combat and world exploration mechanics from Ghosts of Tsushima. While Sekiro is certainly more rage-inducing and focuses on bosses rather than exploration, it’s still one of the best Tsushima-like experiences you can play. Both games also take place in Japan, but Sekiro’s version is a fictional one.

Rise of the Ronin

  • Developer: Team Ninja
  • Release Date: March 22, 2024
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, PC

Up next, we have another hack-and-slash combat game set in a real time period of Japan’s history. Rise of the Ronin takes place in 19th-century Japan and features brutal combat with a sharp difficulty curve. While the combat isn’t as intensive as a Soulslike game, it does present a huge challenge when fighting bosses and even random enemies out in the world. While Rise of the Ronin doesn’t feature as in-depth a look at Japan as Ghost of Tsushima, you can still explore an open world full of content to take part in.

Yakuza 0

  • Developer: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio
  • Release Date: January 24, 2017
  • Platforms: PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox One, PC

Ghost of Tsushima is set in 13th-century Japan and features open countrysides, war-torn villages, and cultural landmarks that are still present today. While that setting is beautiful in its own right, Yakuza 0 offers a more modern look at Japan. Specifically, the game is set in fictionalized versions of 1980s Tokyo and Osaka and follows Yakuza legends Kiryu and Majima in their youth. The game allows you to alternate between characters as the story progresses. Playing as Kiryu means you get to engage in Yakuza 0’s combo-centric combat, while playing as Majima lets you tone things down as you run a cabaret club. Regardless of who you play as, you’ll explore a beautifully crafted map full of areas to discover and characters to meet.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

  • Developer: CD Projekt RED
  • Release Date: May 19, 2015
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt isn’t set in Japan or even Asia for that matter, but it’s one of the most similar experiences to Ghost of Tsushima on this list. The Witcher 3 takes place on a massive fictional continent where you play as Geralt of Rivia. Geralt is trying to track down his adopted daughter Ciri, but the main story can certainly take a backseat to the sheer exploration that’s at your fingertips from the opening hour of the game. You’ll visit meticulously designed cities, engage in dozens of quests, upgrade gear, armor, and equipment, and explore one of the most in-depth worlds ever to grace a video game. The world exploration, combat, and storytelling of The Witcher 3 are where Ghost of Tsushima players will feel right at home.

Black Myth: Wukong

  • Developer: Game Science
  • Release Date: August 20, 2024
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

Black Myth: Wukong is another brutally designed combat experience that’s set in China during the 16th century. It has a story rooted deep in Chinese mythology, but the events of the story are not at the forefront in Wukong. Instead, you’ll explore open zones that are chock-full of varied and difficult, Soulslike bosses to defeat. Wukong does a fantastic job of mixing up different mechanics with bosses, so no two fights feel quite the same. As you defeat more bosses, you’ll progress the story, unlock new abilities, and find new weapons and equipment to use that are supremely helpful in dealing with the next slate of enemies. This is a game that you’ll want to play if you enjoy the setting of Ghost of Tsushima, but want more focus on combat.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

  • Developer: Respawn Entertainment
  • Release Date: April 28, 2023
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

In terms of settings, Ghost of Tsushima and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor couldn’t be more different. Jedi: Survivor picks up the events after Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, but you don’t have to play that game to understand the sequel. As you might expect, Survivor is set within the expansive Star Wars universe, but tells a unique story that spans the galaxy as Cal Kestis and his band of rebels fight the Empire. Survivor not only allows you to explore several large planets, but the combat is surprisingly challenging and engaging. You can utilize a variety of attack types, including a couple with your trusty lightsaber, and use the Force to bend fights to your will.

Red Dead Redemption 2

  • Developer: Rockstar Games
  • Release Date: October 26, 2018
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

Touted as a video game masterpiece by many fans, Red Dead Redemption 2 is not a game you want to miss if you enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima. While the combat in both games is extremely different, the same can’t be said for the attention to detail of the world. Just like Tsushima’s version of Japan, Red Dead Redemption 2’s recreation of the Old West in the 1880s is done exceptionally well. Across the sprawling map, you’ll encounter random activities, bustling towns that feel alive, and gorgeous landscapes that make you question how real life looks. Perhaps the best part about Red Dead 2, though, is the characters that you meet as protagonist Arthur Morgan. You’ll engage with over a dozen main characters throughout the game, and that’s not even counting the multi-hour post-game sequence that follows one of the best conclusions to any video game.

God of War (2018)

  • Developer: Sony Santa Monica
  • Release Date: April 20, 2018
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, PC

When the God of War franchise was rebooted in 2018, it became something else entirely from what it was in the early 2000s. The reboot still follows Kratos, but he now has a son and is entrenched in Norse mythology rather than Greek mythology. From the opening moments of the game, you’ll be mesmerized by the beauty of the Nine Realms, the storytelling ability of Kratos and the other characters you meet, and how much content is available. Just like in Ghost of Tsushima, brutal and varied combat plays a major role in God of War, but you’ll stick around for the world exploration and the stories that play out as you uncover more of the map.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

  • Developer: Ubisoft
  • Release Date: March 20, 2025
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

The Assassin’s Creed franchise features several games that offer a similar experience to Ghost of Tsushima. While the combat in Tsushima more closely mirrors the older Assassin’s Creed games (such as Syndicate, Black Flag, etc.), the setting in Assassin’s Creed Shadows earns it a spot on the list. Set in 16th-century Japan, Shadows offers a wonderfully built world full of cultural landmarks and content to take part in. Shadows allows you to play as two different protagonists, both with drastically different playstyles and abilities, as you journey across Japan during a time of war. The game feels like classic Assassin’s Creed, but features some fantastic narrative elements and fluid combat.

Horizon Forbidden West

  • Developer: Guerrilla Games
  • Release Date: February 18, 2022
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, PC

Horizon Forbidden West is the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, and while either one of those games could be on this list, we’ve gone with the sequel due to its beautiful and varied world. Another initial PlayStation exclusive, Horizon Forbidden West mirrors Ghosts of Tsushima with its gorgeous world, in-depth combat, and freedom to explore. Set in a post-apocalyptic world centuries in the future, machines have taken over the Earth, and your job is to stop them from wiping out humanity. Playing as protagonist Aloy, you can trek across a gigantic map, battle dozens of different enemies, and explore all sorts of various environments. From barren wastelands to lush beaches to underwater cities, the map offers a fantastic blend of landscapes. For combat, you’ll mainly use a bow and arrow, but you can also engage in melee combat and use equipment to dispatch enemies as well.

Elden Ring

  • Developer: FromSoftware
  • Release Date: February 25, 2022
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

We’re back to the Soulslike genre, and this time it’s one of the most modern titles in developer FromSoftware’s storied library of games. Elden Ring has become a cultural phenomenon in recent years, and while it’s still a very difficult game, it’s one that few gamers should miss out on. Elden Ring differs from other Soulslikes in how it goes about its world. You start out in a region with almost no direction on where to go and what to do. As you explore, you’ll discover a staggeringly large map that allows you to defeat dozens of bosses, find new items to upgrade your gear, and advance the story. Combat in Elden Ring is what you’d expect from a Soulslike, but the exploration is just as vast as it is in Ghost of Tsushima.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor

  • Developer: Monolith Productions
  • Release Date: September 30, 2014
  • Platforms: PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC

The Middle-Earth franchise is a somewhat forgotten one, but Shadow of Mordor remains a true gem in the open world genre of games. Shadow of Mordor sees you play as Talion, a Ranger of Gondor who is seeking revenge against Sauron. Throughout the game’s campaign, you’ll encounter plenty of recognizable Lord of the Rings characters and explore an open world full of intriguing locations. Similar to Ghost of Tsushima, Shadow of Mordor features different traversal methods on the map and varied combat that lets you decide how to engage with enemies.

One element of Shadow of Mordor that stands out from other games is the Nemesis system, which allows you to find specific enemies in Sauron’s army to defeat. It adds a personal layer to the combat system and allows you to find areas you might not have previously explored.

Onimusha: Warlords (Remastered)

  • Developer: Capcom
  • Release Date: January 15, 2019
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch

Onimusha: Warlords was originally released in the early 2000s, but a remaster was made in 2019 that offers a more modern way to enjoy the game. Developed by Capcom, Onimusha: Warlords is a samurai adventure with a primary focus on combat. Specifically, you’ll fight enemies using swords, and the combat can only be described as intense and savage. Aside from combat, the game follows a revenge story through Feudal Japan. The exploration of Onimusha: Warlords isn’t anywhere close to the levels seen in Tsushima, but you’ll still find plenty to do as you’re fighting your way through the game’s various levels.

Nioh 2

  • Developer: Koei Tecmo
  • Release Date: March 12, 2020
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, PC

Nioh is yet another franchise set in Japan, and the second installment is considered the series at its best. Nioh 2 is an action RPG that emphasizes ability-based combat. Specifically, the boss fights in Nioh 2 are where you get your money’s worth. Each boss is excellently crafted and features new mechanics that you have to learn if you want to get past them. The boss fights also showcase plenty of colors and effects that make each one a pleasure to experience, even if you’re getting beaten over and over. Compared to Ghost of Tsushima, Nioh 2 is set in a similar location, offers an intense combat system, and follows an interesting story that leads to a fantastic conclusion.

Death Stranding

  • Developer: Kojima Productions
  • Release Date: November 8, 2019
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

Death Stranding isn’t a game you play if you’re only looking for combat engagements and enemies to fight. While you’ll still battle with some enemies, Death Stranding is more about the adventure than anything else. The protagonist you play as is a glorified delivery person who needs to trek across a dangerous, post-apocalyptic version of America to complete jobs. Death Stranding has been labeled a “walking simulator,” but it becomes much more than that as the game goes on. This one is perfect for Ghost of Tsushima fans who enjoy connecting with the story and exploring an open world.
