Elder Scrolls Online Developer Zenimax Workers Unionize

Zenimax Online Studios Workers Make History

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the gaming world, workers at Zenimax Online Studios, the developer behind Elder Scrolls Online, have officially unionized. The Communications Workers of America (CWA) announced the formation of the ZOS United-CWA union, representing a bold step towards labor solidarity in the video game industry. This marks a significant moment in the ongoing movement to secure better working conditions for game developers.

Union Recognition and Expansion Across the U.S.

The union, which boasts a membership of 461 workers, has been recognized by Microsoft, the parent company of Zenimax. The diverse group includes web developers, designers, engineers, and graphic artists, making it a powerful collective of creative and technical professionals. While the majority of unionized workers are based in Maryland, the union spans across the United States, with members in California, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.

This unionization effort is part of the Campaign to Organize Digital Employees (CODE-CWA), a CWA initiative that has been gaining momentum since 2020. With over 6,000 workers unionizing under CODE-CWA’s efforts, the movement is showing no signs of slowing down, sending a clear message to the gaming industry: workers are ready to take action for their rights.

Workers Speak Out: Protecting the Future

The newly formed union has already sparked powerful statements from its members. Alyssa Gobelle, a senior motion graphics artist at Zenimax and a member of ZOS United-CWA, explained the significance of the union in a statement that’s both empowering and eye-opening: “By coming together and forming a union, we’re able to take a powerful step forward in ensuring a better future for ourselves and for our families, to create protections against layoffs and workplace exploitation, and to provide additional layers of support for workers beyond what FMLA and workplace policies already provide.”

The sentiments were echoed by John Hartzell, a principal economy designer at Zenimax, who made a rallying cry for workers everywhere: “Regardless of your studio, your title, or where you’re from, unions work to benefit us all.” His words underscore the growing unity among workers in the gaming industry, fighting for better treatment and job security.

Bethesda Game Studios Joins the Movement

The unionization wave at Zenimax follows a similar action taken earlier this year by hundreds of staff at Bethesda Game Studios, another subsidiary of Zenimax’s parent company, Microsoft. The trend is spreading rapidly across the industry, as workers unite for improved wages, job security, and working conditions, challenging the traditional corporate structure of video game development.

A New Era for Game Developers: The Fight Is Just Beginning

This historic unionization marks the beginning of a new chapter for game developers. As more workers join the movement, the gaming industry may be facing a watershed moment where labor rights become just as important as the games themselves. With unionization continuing to rise across the sector, the future of game development may look dramatically different – and it’s a future where workers are demanding and securing their fair share.
