New York Times Tech Staff Strikes, Urges Readers to Boycott Games

The New York Times Tech Guild has called a strike, requesting readers to show solidarity by refraining from playing popular games like Wordle and Connections.

Reasons Behind the Strike
The union alleges management failed to address key concerns, including:
1. Remote/hybrid work protections
2. “Just cause” job protections
3. Limits on subcontracting
4. Pay equity/fair pay

Union’s Statement
“Our members know their worth, and they will prove that at the picket line today. We ask readers to honor the digital picket line and not play popular NYT games.”

New York Times Response
The Times expressed commitment to working with the Tech Guild but emphasized disappointment with the strike’s timing.

“[We’re] committed to working with the Tech Guild to reach a fair contract… While we respect the union’s right to engage in protected actions, we’re disappointed that colleagues would strike at this time.”

Broader Context
The strike coincides with the U.S. presidential election and marks a significant labor action in the media industry. Game workers have made strides in securing protections, with unions forming at developers like 2K, Sega of America and Blizzard.

What’s Next?
If an agreement isn’t reached by November 4, it will be the first strike to coincide with a presidential election in the NewsGuild since 1964.
